The last time Lyons played Newark in Basketball was 1973 not 1970. We renewed the rival and played 3 games that year but it was never scheduled after that.
As a ’63 LCS grad, baseball third-baseman, football “bench-warmer” and p/t assistant basketball manager, I was privileged to experience small-town athletics before mass media homogenized our culture, making “big is better” the American mantra. Fridays during the long, dark, cold and snowy nights was for basketball, a community event. I kept a shot chart for Coach Blackwell, cut the oranges for half-time and collected the balls and towels. Thank you for the interview with Don Oakleaf. I remember him as being literally head and shoulders above me! Teammates used to call Boeheim, “Sid” but I don’t know why. For the Newark v. Lyons game I would like to have heard Joe Holley and Rick Kowe speak of their memories.
